Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the channel launched a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its peculiarly charming style.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
