Rob Edwards and O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend following the team's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight season.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have historic associations to the club - are part of the names to be considered by the club leadership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who made over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves directors as they start the search of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising choice given he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to provide any compensation.
