El Kaabi's Spectacular Goal Wraps Up Morocco's Victory Over Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations Opening Match.
Host nation the Moroccan side overcame a jittery beginning to defeat Comoros in the competition's opening game on Sunday, thanks to Brahim Díaz and super-sub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a less than dominant showing, however, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the small island nation in the world rankings and had to toil hard for the three points in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Tense Start and Missed Opportunities
Morocco missed an early penalty and were goalless at half-time despite dominating possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
The goal came when Noussair Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before slipping it square for Brahim Díaz to sidefoot home.
Every opening game is never easy but we came good in the second half,” said manager Regragui.
El Kaabi's Piece of Brilliance
The tension was then calmed by a piece of sheer individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only ten minutes following coming on, the forward met a ball into the box with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the win.
Earlier in the match, the hosts might have taken the lead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a foul on Brahim Díaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi effort was kept out by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
The Visitors' Defiant Stand and Late Opportunity
The underdogs comfortably held Morocco for long periods before the hosts' individual talent eventually made the difference.
Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor made several other good stops to limit the scoreline as the game progressed, although his team created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly following the first goal, with Saïd firing straight at keeper Yassine Bounou.
Fitness Worry for Hosts
The victory was partially marred by an injury to Morocco's captain, Saïss, who was forced off after the first half apparently in some distress.
The centre-back had only returned to the national side last month following a year’s absence caused by ankle surgery.
This result continues Morocco's record-breaking run of consecutive wins to nineteen, surpassing the previous record of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
