Hardline Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming Leader.
After a definitive runoff election, ultra-conservative politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Win
After more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Noted for his staunch socially conservative views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely centered on promises to tackle rising violence and radically reduce migration.
He frequently pointed to foreigners, particularly the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His policy ideas envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing detention centers, high walls, security fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Broader Wave
Numerous analysts view Kast's win as fitting into a larger conservative shift in South America, following recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts further frame it as a part of the established swing of power between left and right-wing leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Majority
Despite his sweeping electoral win, Kast is not expected to command an absolute majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are counted together.
This legislative landscape could hinder his plans, including a pledge to reduce public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to detailed concrete steps.
"There are several things about what a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for implement them," said a political science analyst.
The analyst stated, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is very likely we will see austerity policies common for the right. However the area with considerably less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue across the race."
