Heat & Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories After Recent Detentions
The Miami Heat recorded eighty-six opening half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146-114 win over the Grizzlies in their first basketball match since player Terry Rozier was detained over suspected illegal sports betting.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also arrested as part of a broad FBI probe into sports betting. Both men deny the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored eighty-six first-half points to lead Memphis by 39 at halftime, the biggest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo top-scored with twenty-four scores and afterwards stated Rozier had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He's had a beneficial influence on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland additionally won their first game after the arrests, with Brazilian Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and leading the squad to a convincing 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the initial occasion, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"Nothing is more critical to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further said an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he played for the Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the league office can't do.
"So, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they announced recently was an charge.
"Moreover 30 months after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a compromise here between upholding rights and investigating."

Elsewhere, Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic recorded over forty scores for the second game in a row to start the season.
Following racking up 43 scores in a first loss to the Golden State, the Slovenian achieved forty-nine points - along with 11 boards and eight assists - as the Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 128 to 110.
From Greece player Antetokounmpo also had a strong performance with 31 points, twenty rebounds and seven passes in the Bucks' 122-116 victory at the Toronto Raptors.
Houston Rockets were beaten 115-111 by the Pistons despite 37 points from Durant, while Victor Wembanyama had twenty-nine scores, eleven boards and nine blocks in the San Antonio Spurs' extra-time victory against the Pelicans.
