The relatives of young people missing after a deadly inferno at a bar in a Swiss ski resort are confronting an painful wait for answers and appealing for information about their loved ones publicly.

The fire engulfed the a popular bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of south-west Switzerland, in the early hours of January 1st. Circulated images show the roof structure igniting as bottles with sparklers are held aloft.

Authorities have indicated that it could take an extended period to formally name the those who perished of the disaster, which claimed the lives of 40 people and wounded another 119. The national sporting body has released a tribute that he is no longer with us, without directly referencing the fire, paying tribute to a "young athlete who embodied dedication and true sportsmanship."
