Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Russia is scrambling to resume conversations as soon as it learns of cruise missiles." This statement addressed earlier musings about supplying long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Diplomatic Moves and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, observed, "Putin is attempting to disrupt the progress toward greater pressure on the Kremlin." Fried continued, "We'll see tomorrow, but the chances of moving toward a ceasefire by pressuring Russia to engage sincerely seem to have decreased."

This development came after the US president had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Russia until Thursday's call with Putin, which the Russian government characterized as "extremely frank and trustful."

EU Energy Sanctions and Economic Effects

The European Union have set a mandate for energy importers into the EU to demonstrate their fuels are not made from Russian oil, as stated in a document released on Thursday. This measure is part of the European Union's upcoming ban on purchases of refined products processed from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Moscow over its war in the region.

Financial analysts observed that trading patterns appeared to be considering the potential end of India's purchases of Russian oil. Several oil processors in India are getting ready to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual reduction, according to sources knowledgeable about the matter.

"This is a positive development for the oil market as it would eliminate a major customer of Russian crude," said Tony Sycamore, noting that oil prices were stable on Thursday.

Security Situation and Infrastructure Attacks

A large-scale Russian drone and missile assault targeted gas facilities in Ukraine's eastern regions on the same day, resulting in disruptions in eight regions. Authorities in Ukraine stated that Russian forces deployed hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, along with glide bombs.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to attack at our power facilities," said Ukraine's president, adding that attacks impacted the areas of northern Ukraine, Kharkiv, Poltava, northeastern Ukraine and Vinnytsia.

Global Political Responses

Kyiv's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow demonstrated its real attitude to negotiations through the "violence" of these attacks. "Russia once again opted for missiles over talks, making this attack into a direct setback to ongoing diplomatic initiatives," Stefanishyna commented.

Meanwhile, the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced that the EU had little option but to strengthen anti-drone defences against Russia. Kallas announced a "plan" to get ready for possible conflict by the end of the decade, featuring a new defensive network to be completely functional by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is expected to begin working in its first phase by the 2026 timeline and be completely operational by the end of 2027. Brussels hopes to secure the backing of member state representatives at a summit next week.
